Endorsement of the Asbestos National Strategic Plan 2024-2030
The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) is pleased to announce that the Commonwealth and all state and territory governments have endorsed the Phase Three Asbestos National Strategic Plan 2024-2030 (the Plan).
“This milestone represents a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to eliminate asbestos-related diseases in Australia,” said ASSEA’s Chief Executive Officer, Jodie Deakes.
The Phase Three Asbestos National Strategic Plan was developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders and builds on the progress made over the last 10 years under the previous two plans.
“With an estimated 4,000 Australians dying each year from asbestos-related diseases, and approximately 6 million tonnes of ageing asbestos material still present in our built environment, there is now a more urgent need for safe, proactive removal and disposal,” Ms Deakes said.
“The Plan provides a roadmap of how this can be achieved, with actions that include making the regulatory framework more effective and establishing incentive programs to support the safe removal and disposal of asbestos from the residential environment.
“Our economic modelling shows that implementing these actions could see asbestos materials removed from our buildings by 2068, preventing up to 27,000 deaths from asbestos-related diseases. This is forecast to return $1.97 to the economy for every dollar spent.
“Improving the quality of life for those affected by these diseases is another key priority. The Plan focuses on enhancing early diagnosis, advancing treatment methods, and providing comprehensive support services to ensure individuals receive the care and assistance they need.
“Australia is also committed to being a global leader in asbestos safety. By advocating for a worldwide asbestos ban and sharing best practices, we aim to influence international policies and foster global collaboration.
“The Plan includes actions for all governments. It ensures we work towards a common goal and that our actions and priorities are coordinated across the nation. My agency will continue to support governments in the implementation of the Plan through our research, awareness raising and data collection activities. We will also provide regular updates on progress against the Plan’s targets,” Ms Deakes said.
