Goods can be tested before importation by an Australian NATA accredited laboratory or an accredited laboratory overseas to see if asbestos is present. For guidance, refer to information on: "Sampling and testing for asbestos" at the Australian Border Force website.
Testing products prior to shipments leaving the country of origin helps to prevent inadvertently importing asbestos into Australia. There have been cases of illegal asbestos imports resulting in the issuing of safety alerts and recalls.
